Betty Volkmar, 89, died peacefully on March 6, 2021 after a brief illness. Born and raised on the Southwest Side of Chicago, Betty was delighted to spend the last several decades living in Hyde Park, where she enjoyed the view of Lake Michigan every day. Betty graduated from DePaul University with a Master of Arts degree in English. She taught English for 31 years, the last 24 years at Evergreen Park High School.

Betty was preceded in death by the love of her life, Bernard Yuffy, a gifted pianist and a WWII veteran of the Royal Canadian Air Force, and her best friend, colleague, and partner in crime, Barbara Olson. Also preceded in death by her parents, Edward J. and A. Leah Wolff Volkmar.

A gathering to honor Betty will be scheduled at a later date. Betty would have turned 90 on July 28, 2021. A luncheon in her memory on or near her birthday at the Greek Islands Restaurant, her favorite, is under consideration.

This is a picture of my mom, dad and me celebrating a birthday in Greek Town with Betty and Bernie. My mom grew up with Betty and they remained good friends until my mom passed away in 2019. We always referred to Betty as our "Real Mother." She never missed sending cards to us on each holiday. They were always hilarious. I miss her quick wit and loving nature.
At least she's reunited with her loved ones now.

Betty was a friend of my mother's Jean Budding (school nurse) and a family friend. We loved her humor, sarcastic comments, and wit. We enjoyed her visits with Barb Olsen, Bernie and her apartment view!! Betty was my English teacher and she would write
(Brat Budding) on my school papers!! We will miss her. RIP Betty

Miss Volkmar and Miss Olson were so influential in my career as an English teacher. Miss Volkmar had such a great sense of humor added to her lessons. It was obvious that the students were important to her. I’ll always remember that warm smile.

Best. Teacher. Ever. always saw the best in you. I work in a high school and I feel her kindness and willingness to help has shaped me into the type of person that I am today. She will be missed.
