Obituary for Dolly The Beagle

Dolly the Beagle - Central Chapels Grief Companion Dog

One of Central Chapels grief companion dogs, Dolly the Beagle, died peacefully on Friday, December 27, 2019, at home, surrounded by her loved ones and “sister,” Dixie. Dolly was nearly 14 years old and had battled a number of medical problems with tenacity.

Central Chapels owner and Funeral Director, Robert Moynihan, bought Central in 2010 and adopted his first dog, Lilly, to live with him upstairs from the Central Avenue location. In her earliest days at Central, Lilly happened to be in the office with Moynihan when a bereaved family came in without an appointment. Moynihan quickly offered to take Lilly upstairs when the family asked that she remain. That began Central Chapels culture of having grief companion dogs.

Dolly the Beagle joined the family and the firm in April, 2015. Local businesswoman and dog rescuer, Susan Malone, asked Bob Moynihan if he would be willing to foster a 9 year old beagle who had been neglected and needed help. Moynihan agreed to foster Dolly until he met her. It was a failed foster but a successful adoption. Dolly and Lilly became a real tag team in greeting bereaved families. While Lilly would gravitate to people who were outwardly distraught, Dolly gravitated to people with special needs or physical limitations. Neither were trained grief therapy dogs, as the Internal Revenue Service was only too happy to point out regarding business deductions for canine expenses. However, they were grief companion dogs by instinct.

Lilly, also known as Lilly the Wonder Dog, was a cocker spaniel/American Eskimo mix. She died April 24, 2017, at the age of 9 ½ after a month long battle with pulmonary lung disease. Two months after Lilly’s death, Bob Moynihan adopted another rescue, Dixie, who is now almost 4 years old and a beagle/cocker spaniel mix.

Dolly was a sweet, gentle, dog who loved people and other dogs. She was a South Side girl with a wonderful blend of bossiness, toughness and sweetness. She was preceded in death by her pal, Lilly the Wonder Dog. She is survived by her daddy, Robert Moynihan; her sister, Dixie; her “Aunt Patti” Grzenia, a wake attendant at Central Chapel who often cared for Dolly and her daytime mom, Ann Jedlowski, Office Administrator at Central Chapels.

A private family viewing was held for Dolly in the Central Chapel residence on Friday, December 27, 2019. She will be buried with Lilly on Monday, December 30, 2019.
