Obituary for James M. Howell

James Michael Howell, 72, passed away in his home on December 5, 2023. A veteran of the Vietnam War, and proudly served in the United States Navy.

At the age of 17, James enlisted in the Navy and said it was the best decision he ever made. Upon returning home James was employed at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital as a truck driver. During this time, he was also a volunteer firefighter in Frankfort, Illinois. He was an avid fisherman and spent many summers throughout his life fishing in Nevis, Minnesota with his family. More recently you could find him wearing his Navy Veteran baseball cap fishing the local spots hoping to catch the “big one.” He was a huge fan of Elvis and enjoyed listening to his gospel songs, Peace in the Valley being his favorite. Jimmy, as he was lovingly known by family and friends, never met a stranger. He had a big heart, and a laugh that would always put a smile on our faces. He will be dearly missed by many, but none more than his family and three sisters.

May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

is survived by his daughters, Kimberly (Jim) Rudnicki and Kristen Denson; his grandchildren, Justin, Joshua, Jordan, Jacob, DeMonte, Jalen, and Miah; his great-grandchildren, Kayden, Aubrey, and Penelope; Sisters, Joan (Steve) Kasper, Jean (Gary) Grono, and Leslie Ann (Lane) DeBartolo; Uncle, great-uncle, and great great-uncle to many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father Everett E. Howell and mother Constance E. Hynes.

A Committal Service with full Military Honors will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, 20953 W. Hoff Rd, Elwood, IL on Friday, January 5, 2024 at 12 Noon.
