Obituary

Jose Luis “Googie” Lopez, 63, January 1, 2021, longtime resident of the Southwest Side of Chicago, West Elsdon neighborhood, beloved husband of Patricia (Mendez) Lopez; cherished father of Yvette (Juan) Campos, Bernadette Lopez (Rene Mendez), and Jesse Lopez; fond son of Juana Garcia Lopez and the late Juan Lopez; adored “papa” of Vanessa Lopez-Campos, Mireya Campos, Julian Campos, Ximena Campos, Amelie Mendez, and step-grandson, Julian Mendez; devoted brother of Josephine Lopez (late), Margaret Hall, Teresa Guerrero, and Marcos Lopez; fun-loving uncle, cousin, and friend to many.

Jose loved fishing! He was a proud Chicago sports team fan, especially the Chicago Cubs. He enjoyed feeding the birds in his yard and bird watching. He loved to collect comic books, cook–especially fish dishes–and enjoyed music of just about all varieties. One of his favorite T.V. shows was Law & Order. He had a wonderful sense of humor. He was kind, hard working and knew something about just about everything, being referred to as “a jack of all trades.” Jose will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

My deepest sympathies to you guys for losing a great man. He was like a dad to me growing up while I was at your house, eating your food, playing video games with Jesse lol. The funniest story I have to share - and hopefully this will help give some of you a nice chuckle - is that Jesse and I were kids and in the car with him one day going Southbound on Pulaski & 33rd, merging lanes right off the train tracks, when all of a sudden another driver did not want to let us in. Being the short-tempered tough guy that dad was, he stayed in his lane, wedged between the parked cars and the normal lane. Dad wouldn't back down. After a short distance (along with some honking and yelling), dad finally took his handy-dandy crowbar out (no clue from where lol) and yelled "Get out of the F*'n car" as he opened his car door. Personally, I think dad could've handled himself without the crowbar (given the fear of God in the other driver's eyes) but as scared as Jesse & I were that day, we still laugh about it to this day. I think that was the charm about dad - he always kept it real. He never backed down. He was a tough but charismatic man who will most definitely be missed.

So sorry to hear about Googie,s passing. Everytime I talked to him we would talk about our beloved Chicago sports teams and generally kid around. I specifically recall us kidding with Jimbo (rip) all the time. My son also loved talking to Googie about sports. Googie also remembered to send Linda and I a Xmas card every year. He will be surely missed. Linda and I send our sincere condolences to the entire Lopez family.
