Mattie Jordan Brooks, 92, July 31, 2017, lifetime resident of Chicago, except for the few years in San Francisco where number one son was born: sister of Aleater Webster; mother of Lewis Anthony Jordan; aunt of Dr. Lois Clarke-Bassett and Robert Bassett; aunt of Vincent Webster; grand-aunt of sisters Elizabeth and Rebecca Bassett; and dear mother-in-law of Anna Werner.
She was a retired Chicago Public School teacher, beginning her long and committed career at Daniel Hale Williams Elementary School. Later she took on mathematics as a specialty, in which she earned her M.A. In her retirement, she served with the Chicago Friends of the Amistad Research Center, taking a momentous trip to Sierra Leone, from where the Amistad originally set sail in 1839. She was a member and regular supporter of the Congregational Church of Park Manor.
