Obituary for Michael A. Cadena

Michael Cadena, 96 years old, was born on September 8, 1927, rested in eternal peace on September 11, 2023. He was a resident of the Southwest Side of Chicago, and former resident of the Back of the Yards area where he was raised.

Michael is survived by recently deceased wife, Adela Cavada Campos (Cadena) and their children, and by the deceased former wife Helen Cadena and their children. Michael was a devoted Father of late Irma Cadena, Michael Cadena (Sara), Richard Cadena (Veronica), Belinda Cadena (Jesus), Rebecca Cadena, and Roger Cadena (Reyna), Miguel Cadena (Katie), Margarita (Peter) and Sergio (Maria). He was a devoted son of late Pascual Cadena and late Margarita De Hoyos and dear brother of Helene Ortega (Cadena), Esther Cadena (Greg) and Linda Gonzalez (Cadena).

He was a loving grandfather and great-grandfather to many children. Michael was a beloved uncle, godfather, mentor, and friends to many. Family was the most Important part of his life.

Michael owned and worked diligently to manage a few businesses which included a grocery store, income tax/immigration and notary service, along with employment as a Truant Officer at the Chicago Public Schools and Deputy Sheriff of Cook County. He enjoyed traveling, spending time with his family, working, and liked a variety of foods and his favorite was breaded shrimp. He enjoyed watching black and white movies and reminiscing to music and his favorite holiday was Christmas.

Michael was a very patriotic man and served our country as a member of the United States Marine Corps USMC Semper Fi from 1946 to 1948. He was a devoted military member and was recognized at the Washington Veteran’s Honor flight.

Michael was a pillar of the Back of the Yards community and helped an extreme number of immigrant families to be joined together. On Christmas, he would prepare and donate fruit baskets to the families in need. He was the President and active member of the Chicago Azteca Lions Club. He will be deeply missed by his family, relatives, and friends. His legacy will live forever through his children.

Family and friends will gather at CENTRAL CHAPEL, 6158 S. Central Ave., Chicago, IL, on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023, from 3 to 8 p.m., with Funeral Service at 5:30 p.m. Burial with military honors on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2023, 1 p.m., at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL.
