Vidal “Vito” Castañeda Sr., 90, of Chicago, Illinois passed away suddenly and peacefully on December 28th, 2020.

"Everyday, memories of you come our way. Though absent, you are ever near, still missed, still loved, and ever dear.”

He was born on April 28th, 1930 to Timoteo and Louisa Castañeda (née Marquez). A native Chicagoan and a lifetime resident of the Pilsen community he was raised alongside his siblings Bernardo, John, Joe, Max, Mary-Lou, Alice, Cruz, David, and Manuel. A beloved husband to Soledad “Shirley” Castañeda (née Garcia) for 67 years and loving father to Gloria, Cruz (Jose), Vito Jr., and Richard (Amalia).

Vito was a force of nature, determined to provide for his family and give them the life he felt they deserved. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world, something he often mentioned. He was unendingly proud of his children and always tried his best to support them.

Vito was also a devoted grandfather to his grandchildren; Stephen (Jeannette), Rene (Loraine), Vanessa (John), Nicholas, Anthony (Deborah), Andrew (Anel), Gabriel (Patricia), Michelle (Christopher), Diana (Jol), Sondra (Thomas), Jeannette (Christian), Christina (Robert), Monica (Orlando), Jennifer, and Richard Jr. (Araceli), his great-grandchildren; Esteban, Jenel, Julian (Felicita), Ricardo, Jayden, Evie, Yolanda, Alfonso, Rene Jr., Alex, John Nathan, Jaime (Carla), Jalissa, Isaac, Priscilla, Jocelyn, Alexia, Adrian, Lucas, Elias, Ava, Dominic, Maxwell, Cehcily, Edwin, Stella, Isaiah, Mariah, Miah, Mia, Jordyn, and Cleo, and his great-great grandchildren; Julian Jr., Veronica, Anika, Hailey, and Nathan; beloved uncle to many nephews and nieces.

We love you so much, Pops, and we were very blessed to have you in our lives. The family you began 67 years ago - your legacy - continues to grow and flourish. You will be cherished, in all of our hearts, always. - Your loving family.

"Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. "In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also....Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me"'
John 14 (NIV)

The family requests that any notes of condolences are sent to the Castanedo home. There will be a funeral service held with details yet to come.

A private family burial will take place at a later date at St. Mary Cemetery in Evergreen Park, IL.
