Lt. Col. William R. Haeflinger
July 18, 1924 – April 17, 2015
William R. Haeflinger, age 90. Beloved husband of the late Marie (nee Banik). Loving father of Charles (Sharon) Haeflinger, Suzanne (Lawrence) Bromberek, Marsha (Timothy) Smunt and AnnMarie Bobel. Devoted grandfather of Angela (Daniel) Bernhardt, Tracy (Joel) Morrison, Michael Bobel, Jr. and Katrina Bobel. Proud great grandfather of Ava Bernhardt. Cherished brother of Margaret/Peg (Stan) Skalski, Edward (Clara) Haeflinger, James (Elizabeth) Haeflinger and uncle of many.
William was a World War II B-17 combat pilot with the 8th Army Air Corps 381st Bombardment Squadron in England, where he participated in 29 combat missions over Europe. He was reactivated during the Korean War and served during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Viet Nam War. He retired in 1973 after 30 years of military service. As a civilian, he was the Disaster Preparedness Officer at O’Hare Airport. He was a member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society and St. Symphorosa Parish and Super Club.
During his final years he very much enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. Services at Central Chapel, 6158 S. Central Ave., Chicago, where family and friends will gather on Monday, April 20, from 3 to 9 p.m. Funeral Tuesday, April 21, 8:45 a.m., at chapel, to St. Symphorosa Church, 6135 S. Austin Ave., Chicago. Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Private burial at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
